The difference is in gold purity. 14K gold (also called 585) contains 58.5% pure gold and 41.5% other metals. 18K gold (also called 750) contains 75% pure gold and 25% other metals. Because 18K has more gold in the alloy, it has a richer colour and is more expensive. Pure gold (marked 999 or 24K) is very soft, so jewellery is usually made from 14K or 18K gold — for better strength and everyday wear.
